I’m with you on most of this. I was there for mobile and Web 2.0 and all the rapid changes. This feels different though. It’s an exponential push to make humans increasingly irrelevant. And while there are many wonderful aspects to lowering barrier to entry for various tech and creation tools, the reality is that wealth inequality has gotten much MUCH worse and our planet’s climate is wavering over multiple devastating tipping points of mass death and extinction. AI accelerates all of these things along with eating up the exact things we need to combat the problems: human connection, connection to nature, care for people. What’s the point of humans in this future? What even is the vision if the promises of these technologies truly manifest? We can try and keep up and stay relevant for a while but eventually it will eat us all.

This week I was at the Web Summit (Rio de Janeiro) with a friend. We are both unemployed and went to catch up on the discussions and do that “see and be seen” thing. And at a certain point, both exhausted, we sat on the grass to talk about this exact feeling. She works in Education and, in her most recent job, she said that she often felt incapable of providing the training she was offering to students. She even joked that she wanted to take the same course they are taking, because they are leaving the market much better prepared than we were.

I started reading today's text with great curiosity because this period of time between projects has been essential for me to think about a “career reboot” as well. The work I have done my whole life no longer makes much sense. I know I am young, but even so, I feel that technologies and the market are transforming in a frightening way. I hope to be able to reinvent myself and continue surfing the new technological waves. But, deep down, I confess that I am scared.

The feeling of irrelevance just gets more intense the longer you're around. I have reached the point where I have to look up the 'current' meaning of some words, ha ha. Keeping a growth mindset and learning alongside those from different generations and walks of life is critical, and none of us knows what the world will look like in even a few years! It's kind of a strange, scary and exciting time.
